In the road construction industry, equipment and machinery are constantly exposed to harsh conditions, making it essential to have the right tools to ensure the longevity and efficiency of the operation. The road leveler equipment used by our customer was no exception, and the casters that were currently on the leveler were not able to withstand the harsh conditions of the job site.
The asphalt splashing caused the bearings to seize, compounded by the equipment sitting outside all the time – a situation resulting in lost productivity and costly repairs. Not to mention the $6,000 – $10,000 the company was spending every quarter on the purchase of new wheels.
Through a few team conversations, we were able to address these issues head on: Instead of going with a 12×5 dual wheel option that the leveler was currently using, a bigger 16×5 single wheel was used, including sealed bearings for maximum debris resistance.
This change not only increased the lifespan of the application by more than 300%, but it also saved the company thousands of dollars in repair costs. The company no longer had to spend up to $10,000 every three months on the purchase of new wheels. (The new 16×5 wheel is going on a year of service). The bigger wheel also offered better stability and reduced the push/pull forces required to move the equipment, which reduced the risk of strain injuries to the operators and the associated compensation costs.
The construction company was so impressed with the solution that they refused to purchase from any other vendors and are currently working with Caster Concepts to get a customized drive wheel for another application.
