What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a type of coating applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a “skin”. The powder may be a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer.

How does Powder Coating Work?

Powder is applied to a part through electrostatics:

  • The spray gun imparts a positive charge to powder.
  • Parts to be coated are electrically grounded.
  • The difference in electrical charge attracts powder to part.
  • Powder builds up on the part until the electric charge is fully insulated from the layer of powder.
  • Once the part is covered in powder it is placed in an oven to cure
  • The powder melts into a uniform film and cures into a hard, solid surface.
  • All booths and ovens are 30 feet long x 10 feet wide x 10 feet high
  • The oven operating temperature up to 500°F
  • Parts can be coated in over 6,500 different colors!

Attractive and durable, finished parts are removed from the oven and ready to be shipped once cooled.
