When Does an Application Require Steel Swivel Casters?

December 20, 2019 By: Bill deMink

Heavy Duty CastersMaking certain that you have the right heavy-duty industrial caster for your application can seem a little daunting at first. There are dozens of options available, including steel Swivel on Swivel casters. These types of casters are designed to provide incredible mobility and reduced push force.

Here’s a quick primer about the true benefits of steel casters with swivels so that you can make the best choices for your unique needs.

What are Steel Swivel Caster Wheels?

Steel swivel caster wheels are made of forged steel, which is known for its excellent durability and incredible longevity, even in the harshest environments. The difference between standard casters and swivel casters is this: standard casters can only move in one direction and will not turn when force is applied from the side.  Steel swivel casters will turn as needed.

If your application calls for enhanced mobility and the need to maneuver loads through tight spaces or around sharp corners, you should consider swiveling steel casters.

Industries and applications that can use a little swivel.

Steel swivel casters are best suited for medium-duty power-driven equipment, but they are also ideal for manually handled heavy-duty loads. Some of the most common applications for steel swivel casters include:

– Mobile work platforms
– Warehouse trucks and dragline trucks
– Production racks and carts
– Die tables
– Corrugated steel box trucks
– Heavy portable storage racks
– Scrap hoppers
– Gantry cranes

This is not a complete list of applications, but it does provide an ample overview of just how flexible and beneficial steel swivel caster wheels can truly be.

Do You Need to Install Swivel Locks and Brakes?

In some cases, it may be best to install swivel locks or consider buying a heavy-duty swivel caster with a brake. The two are completely different, and both offer unique benefits.
Heavy Duty Casters· Swivel locks turn a swiveling caster into a rigid caster, which reduces its mobility. Swivel lock casters are ideal in situations when you need to limit the mobility of a cart, rack, or piece of equipment at certain times. Swivel locks come in various types and forms, such as welded-on locks and hand or foot-activated locks.

Heavy Duty Caster Brakes· Caster brakes prevent the caster from moving at all. When both the brake and the swivel lock have been engaged, the equipment remains immobile.

This is often important for safety in situations when loads must be stationary on uneven ground or during sideloading. Caster brakes come in wraparound, dual-side, or single-side options. Some tighten a brake against the shoe, typically found in heavy-duty casters. In light-duty applications, caster brakes often tighten against the hub. If you are not sure which heavy-duty steel swivel caster is best for your application’s needs, Caster Concepts can help you make the right choice.
