A material handling manufacturing firm was contracted by a rail car manufacturer to create a carrier for rail cars as they go through the manufacturing process. The rail cars were extremely heavy, weighing about 150,000 lbs., and each wheel had to carry 17,500 lbs. and roll freely. In addition, one set of wheels on each of the carriers was powered by a motor. The manufacturer did not have the ability to create a solution for their client, and thus needed to find a solution to keep the client’s job moving.
The manufacturer found Caster Concepts while searching online for a solution to their unique situation.
The Caster Concepts sales and engineering teams worked with the customer to design and build solid steel single flange wheels on a stub axle. The axle/wheel assembly was mounted between pillow blocks for increased bearing capacity and alignment. The manufacturer was able to use these new assemblies on their client’s larger project.
