If we were to ask 10 different people how they would qualify heavy duty caster wheels, we would receive 10 different answers. All the answers would be relative to that persons experiences and environment. Someone who works in an office may think that the casters under a large copier are heavy duty, while a laborer in a production facility would regard the casters on a large trash gondola as heavy duty caster wheels.

All industrial casters are generally regarded as heavy duty casters, but within their own category, industrial casters may also be classified by duty. There are what may be considered standard duty, medium duty

and heavy duty caster wheels, specifically within industrial casters. The difference between the duty rating is...

Battery life and performance is constantly being improved with new technologies, but the challenge for extending battery life still remains. One way to improve battery performance on AGV’s and battery powered carts like the Conceptual Innovations Drive Cart, is by reducing the amount of power needed to move the cart, the push force. Reducing initial and continuous push force on material handling carts has been a goal of engineers for years. The primary reason being reduction of risk of injury due to overexertion.

While custom and costly are both 6 letter words that start with C, they are not intertwined. All too often, mention of the word custom triggers thoughts of added expense.

That is an old mentality, stemming from a society accustomed to mass production. When Henry Ford said “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black”, he was in the midst of developing the assembly line, and quick drying paint, was only available in black. The quick drying paint was necessary to maintain “full-speed” assembly. At that time, standardization was required for the assembly line to be effective.

How many times have you bought something on price alone, choosing the product or service strictly because it had the lowest price?

One of the greatest benefits of a free enterprise system is freedom of choice. The elimination of almost all restrictions on businesses generally provides for great variety, and great competition. In order to win over customers, businesses must differentiate their product and make that difference clear to the purchaser.

Today, thanks in great part to the internet, more and more companies, in several varying industries, are offering customers the ability to customize their products. Items as simple as credit cards, offer you the ability choose between lower interest rates or a rewards program, some even allow you to customize the appearance of the card with a selection of stock images, or upload your own personal photo to imprint on the face of the card. While the automobile is arguably the first product to offer customization through options, customization today is becoming more common, and it’s not limited to high priced, major purchases.

The term Ergonomics was first used over 150 years ago, it is composed of two Greek words, Ergon meaning “work”, and Nomos meaning “law or custom”, essentially it is the “Custom of Work”. The very root of this term refers to how work is done. In the early 1900’s, the dawn of the industrial age, ergonomic concepts were developing, aiming to improve worker productivity by achieving efficiencies through improved job processes.

Heavy duty industrial casters are used in a variety of applications, ranging from a simple work cart to tools made to carry airplane nosecones. When designing the specifications for your industrial caster application, it is very important to take the entire environment into consideration. While casters are built with large safety factors and are able to withstand severe impacts and heavy loads, there are some commonly overlooked aspects of a design that can cause caster failure. This article will discuss some of the more common causes of industrial casters in use.

Ask anyone on the street about the leading cause of workplace injuries, and you’d be hard pressed to find many people who would foster an accurate guess.

Often, it is the most visible of workplace accidents that gain the most attention – falls, strikes, vehicle accidents and entanglements with machinery are the ones most often cited, given their physical and lasting manifestations.

Are Your Industrial Casters Up to the Challenge?

Assembly carts are manufacturing’s utility player – the lumbering linchpin of the factory, whether delivering materials used in the manufacturing process, or removing goods that are ready for sale. Such carts are a critical link in the manufacturing chain – often moving loads that tip the scales at thousands of pounds or more.

December, 2014

Industrial carts are critical to most manufacturing processes. They are like the lifeblood that runs through the veins of the production system. Almost anywhere you look in a plant, there is a cart zooming along, delivering parts or materials to a production area or removing finished goods.

This process is continuous – in some robust operations, carts can be shuttling across three daily shifts. Of course, their presence is generally heard as well as seen – cart movement generally is accompanied by noise that, at peak levels, can eclipse 100 decibels (dB(a)). With so many large machines and heavy equipment in use in a manufacturing plant, one may think the noise created by cart or a rack is no big deal – actually, it is.

Tough. Durable. Long-lasting. All of these attributes come to mind when describing polyurethane casters

which have become a popular option for wheel tread on industrial casters and wheels of all types.

Polyurethane tires – when added to drive wheels, industrial wheels or casters – can have numerous benefits that may not be immediately evident – until one experiences the difference in their manufacturing operation. In a previous blog, we talked about how such tires can extend the life of custom caster wheels. Now, here are some other benefits to consider when considering polyurethane for your casters...

Collaboration Leads to Best Paper Award Reaction Industries and Anderson Development Company

ALBION, Mich. (Oct. 23, 2009) – A technical paper written by members of Anderson Development Company and Reaction Industries LLC, a division of Caster Concepts,  Inc., won the Best Paper Award in the Fundamentals of Elastomers session at the recent Polyurethanes Conference held in Washington D.C. The conference is sponsored by the Center for the Polyurethane Industry (CPI) and is the largest annual polyurethane conference in North America. The paper entitled “Determining the Stoichiometry of MDI-Based Elastomers using Compression Set and Its Relation to Dynamic Performance” details a method to ensure that MDI polyurethanes are processed to achieve optimal performance.

“It was great working collaboratively with our customer, Caster Concepts, as they have made significant investments over the years to make themselves a first-class quality manufacturer of high-performance caster wheels,” said Dr. Steve Seneker, Senior Chemist, from Anderson Development Company stated. “They have a strong commitment to continuous improvement which this project helps to advance as we determined the effects of humidity and conditioning time on achieving the optimal dynamic performance. Caster Concepts can leverage this information to make the best possible high-performance caster wheels.”

The stoichiometry, or ratio between the NH/OH and NCO groups in the polyurethane’s chemistry, affects the resulting properties of the urethane once cured. Unlike other urethanes, there is no direct analytical method to determine that ratio in MDI-based elastomers. Due to the combined research of Anderson Development Company and Reaction Industries, a method of determining stoichiometry was established by studying its effects on the physical properties of the material. Also, during the course of the research, a process to predict and even accelerate the time it takes for an MDI-based urethane part to condition before it can be put into service was determined. Typically parts made from these materials take 30 days to fully develop their material properties.  Results from this paper showed that urethane could be fully cured for high dynamic application in as little time as 14 days.

“It was a privilege to work with the scientific staff at Anderson Development. It is collaborations such as these that push our field forward. We are very focused on innovation and it is very rewarding to work with Anderson who is equally focused,” said Denise Kenney, Polymer Engineer, Reaction Industries, LLC.

Caster Concepts strives to push the leading edge of technology within the caster industry.  Collaboration with key suppliers is just one means CCI has increased its knowledge-base.
