Caster Concepts' RapidType Engineering Services

In the fall of 2005 Caster Concepts designed and built the new engineering and testing area that presently is home to our six engineers and the engineering efforts that drive our entire business unit. The engineering area is approximately 2000 square feet with 500 feet committed solely to testing. The area provides an open environment for collaborative problem solving and innovative product design. The engineering team is a perfect blend of experienced, mature leadership, outhful enthusiasm and a "don’t know the word impossible" attitude.

The engineering area houses:
  • Software Packages - SolidWorks; the platform of choice for our engineering group. We also have AutoCAD 2006 to meet customer preferences. Our engineers have extensive experience with ProE and Catia when the need arises.
  • CMM. For the most demanding design layout problems or the customer with the most demanding of quality specifications we are able to afford CCM service with our Cordax RS50 DCC CMM with open DIMS software. With its large 'envelope' we can measure the largest of casters to assure the closest tolerances.
  • "Grade A" layout space which facilitates the design, prototyping and building of all casters big and small.
  • Storage of all precision gauges and fixture that are an important part of our 'special and custom' business.
  • "White Boards Galore" which drives the open expression of ideas and 'out of the box' thinking. Creativity is an important part of the long term goals of our business model.

Ben Miles, Director of Engineering - Ben has grown up in the caster business and is one of the most knowledgeable person in the design and development of special and custom casters. He has extensive application knowledge and is able to connect that with technical knowledge to address any customer need. In the 10 years that Ben has been with CCI he has had a huge impact on the growth of the business. Contact Ben at bmiles@casterconcepts.com and discuss your particular need for special or custom application.

Dr. Elmer Lee

Dr Elmer Lee- The father of CasterShoX- Elmer has been associated with the business for the past 3 years. While most of his time has been spent in further developing the CasterShoX product line, Elmer’s impact on the business is much greater. Elmer has a masters and PhD from MIT in mechanical engineering and manufacturing. His impact on all facets of our business has been tremendous. Elmer’s greatest asset is that he can tackle the most difficult technical problem and sort through all the engineering and the math necessary to understand the issues but in the end he can put the problem and the solution in words that all of us can understand. Please contact Elmer at elee@casterconcepts.com and discuss how to minimize/alleviate shock loading in sensitive applications.

Doug Backinger - BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Doug has spent two summers with us prior to accepting a full time engineering position in May of 2006. Doug is a great young man that has tremendous knowledge that he is able to apply to our core products. Doug is also instrumental in other business units and has developed extensive knowledge manufacturing processes, work flow and logistics optimization. He comes to CCI with a great work ethic and great technical skills. Contact Doug at dbackinger@casterconcepts.com to discuss quality and process optimization projects.

Chris Colyn - BS in Product Design Engineering from Ferris State University

Chris Colyn - BS in Product Design Engineering in May of 2005 from Ferris State University- Chris joined CCI in the fall of 2005 and has proven himself as an outstanding resource for engineering technical knowledge and hands on expertise. He has an intuitive understanding of all things mechanical. Contact Chris at ccolyn@casterconcepts.com to assist you with your mechanical development projects.

Denise Kenney has recently fulfilled her lifelong dream of graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in Material Science Engineering. Denise is responsible for the development and testing of new polymers for demanding applications. She is a key person in our R&D capabilities and in our short run polyurethane batch operation. Please contact Denise to discuss opportunities in the application of polyurethane wheels and parts. Contact Denise at dkenney@casterconcepts.com.

Karen Travis - AAS in Computer Aided Draft and Design from Kellogg Community College

Karen Travisis the newest member of the engineering team. A recent graduate of Kellogg Community College, Karen has an associate degree in Computer Aided Draft and Design. Karen has become a key member of the mechanical design team working closely with Ben, Doug and Chris to develop fixtures, tooling and other hardware. Karen can be reached at ktravis@casterconcepts.com.

The open interaction of people and ideas is a key part of the design and functionality of the engineering area. We believe that collectively we will come to higher quality solutions as a group. Creative minds with sound experience, excellent mentoring and outstanding basic skills will be a key part of making manufacturing in the U.S. globally competitive. Please take advantage of the engineering expertise that we have at Caster Concepts. I believe we have the most talented and knowledgeable group of engineers in the industry.
